New Opening Titles vs. Older Opening Titles

I also did some research into older romantic comedies and the latest ones, I have decided to compare 'Love Actually' which was released in 2003 and 'Killers' released in 2010.

Comparing their opening titles, Love Actually starts with a voice over of Hugh Grant who is often related with Romantic Comedies who has also starred in other rom-coms like 'Notting Hill' by what he is saying like when he talks about the plane crashing into the twin towers how the passengers weren't make hurtful phone calls but telling their loved ones of their love, he also says it in a way that you can immediately guess its a romantic comedy. The film that you watch in the beginning is the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport and sets a sad and happy theme to the film.

Also the comedy part kicks in with the actor Bill Nighy singing the classic by Wet Wet Wet called love is all around me but with a twist of Christmas is all around me, instead and messing up with singing the words of the original and not the new version. It meets the audience expectations of a Rom-com because of the actors used and the themes and colours of writing in the opening titles.

Comparing this film with 'Killers' it starts with a women on a plane having a funny conversation with her parents after she has just split with her boyfriend, you can tell this is a Romantic Comedy from these opening titles because of how they are talking about her love life and making jokes about her being single and 'getting dumped'

The title of this film doesn't immediately shout Rom-com but the opening titles do.
But on the other hand this film stars Ashton Kutcher a known actor for Rom-com's such as 'Valentines Day' this could give the audience a clue to it being a Romantic Comedy. Also the connections that themain characters have straight away  give it away that they will eventually be together.

  1. This is incomplete you need to show that you understand how media language (cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing and sound) is being used to communicate meaning and also how the opening fits the codes and conventions of an opening. You could also comment on any influences you have drawn from it
